North Lebanon is beautiful by its traditional Lebanese red rooftops and green landscapes. Cedar trees take refuge in the northern mountain summits which are covered with lakes and forests. There is a strong reliance on agricultural activity in the region where cultivated areas amount to 28 per cent. A great part of the population lives through cultivating their land.
North Lebanon is the country’s most deprived region. One in two people living in this area is classified as underprivileged given the fact that 52.6 per cent of the population is poor. Almost 18 per cent of Lebanon’s extremely poor live in the North. The level of extreme poverty in this region is more than twice the national average, and the residents of the area lack many basic needs especially in terms of housing, water and sanitation, education, and income-generating activities.
