The South is known for its archeological treasures, captivating landscapes, lively souks, fruits plantations, springs, and is a striking summary of Lebanon’s diversity. Nonetheless, during the 2006 war the South was amongst the intensely targeted areas. Its infrastructure was severely damaged and the large majority of its population was displaced.
South Lebanon suffers from high levels of poverty and illiteracy. The population in the Nabatiye governorate is 19.2 per cent poor. This number is more than doubled in the South governorate reaching a 42.2 per cent. Illiteracy rates are highest in this region: 10 per cent of Lebanese in the South governorate and 13 per cent of those in the Nabatiye governorate are illiterate. Extreme poverty is highly prevalent at a 13.8 per cent in the South –11.6 per cent in the South governorate and 2.2 per cent in Nabatiye governorate – the second poorest region in Lebanon.
Given the disadvantaged conditions of the Lebanese living in the South, LIVE LEBANON projects are designed to address their challenges focusing on activities that would improve living conditions, educational resources, and establish long-term income-generating opportunities.
For the first phase of LIVE LEBANON the following villages will be incorporated: Addaisse, Debel, Deir Mimas, Hasbaya, Houla, Kfardounine, Khiam, Marjeyoun, Nabatiyeh, Qleileh, Rmeich, Soultanyeh, and Tebnine. Below you can find more information on the projects, read news, and see pictures from the region.
