WHERE Batroumine (Bayt Rumin) El-Koura, North Lebanon

WHO More than 1,000 inhabitants of Batroumine and its surrounding villages.

WHY Due to financial constraints, rehabilitation and restoration of traditional Lebanese houses have been overlooked in many areas of Lebanon. The village of Batroumine receives limited tourism and employment opportunities though the village contains an important cultural site which is also a notable heritage landmark of potential eminence and income-generating prospects for its inhabitants. The rehabilitation project will provide the villagers with significant economic benefits in promoting and fostering a local tourism industry. By exposing Batroumine and attracting visitors, the renewed cultural identity of the village will help generate additional income through providing employment opportunities for the community. Moreover, the renovation and conservation of the medieval house will be a symbol of the rural revival of Lebanese culture and a chance for villagers and outsiders to rediscover their history.

HOW The project will support the complete restoration of the ground floor of the structure, housing large conference rooms for local meetings, a public library and a permanent exhibition hall.
